As 2014 commences, it's only natural to look back on the previous year and take stock. In the blink of an eye, the year was gone. But what was left behind was transformative. Lessons learned, choices made, new friends entered and some old ones quietly slipped away.
In the span of a year, I got certified to teach yoga, lived through a kitchen renovation, dealt with an anxious child, cried as my eldest went to sleep away camp, celebrated 10 years of marriage to my amazing husband, prayed like crazy to some higher power when my mom had surgery and laughed a lot. But the biggest accomplishment of 2013 wasn't the acquisition of anything tangible, it was something that happened gradually, something that snuck up on me.
In 2013, I learned to be courageous.
As most of you know, I'm a bit of a yoga junkie. To say that I'm a little obsessed with yoga, really isn't an understatement. I think about it more hours of the day than I'd like to admit. I visualize contorting my body into poses that I'll most likely never get into. I lie awake at night thinking of new sequences for my classes. I talk about it constantly. I'm quite sure my friends are sick of hearing about it.
But here's the thing, when you love something so much, you want other people to love it too!
I had been thinking about doing a yoga teacher training for a while and finally had the courage to take the leap. There were times I had to dig deep, study hard and breath. A lot.
But the hardest part wasn't the actual training, it was believing in myself and my ability to be a good teacher after I had the certificate in my hands. There was a "what now?" moment when I thought, shit, I really have to do this. That was the scary part. I can recall moments driving in my car trying to figure out how to justify all the money I just spent to my husband as I explained why I just couldn't teach yoga. But you can't justify being scared.
So I took the leap. And I landed at a beautiful yoga studio whose owner took a chance and believed in me. For that, I am forever grateful.
Maybe there's something you've been wanting to accomplish. Something crazy. Something scary. Something out of your comfort zone. Maybe this is the year to set aside your fear and do something courageous. What's the worst that could happen?
May your heart be kind, your mind fierce and your spirit brave.
Peace and love.
